Chapter 1 ~ Death

>> Sunday, January 25, 2009

Moisture collected on the window pane, tiny beads that glistened in the soft light. Melinda smiled wistfully as she drew the shape of a heart and then abruptly wiped it away, water gliding down like tears.

Love, it was something Melinda had closed herself off to since her husband announced one day that he was leaving her. The affair with their interior decorator should have been obvious but Melinda was young and deliriously in love with him. She begged Damian not to leave her promising anything, sobbing hysterically, "What about Thalia? She isn't even a year old! Please Damian, don't leave us!"

Damian folded his arms and smiled sheepishly. "You know I didn't want children Mellie. I'd be a terrible father."

"What am I supposed to do? Tell me what to do Damian? I'm begging you!"

He stood there and for a moment Melinda felt hopeful. "Sorry sweetheart, this just isn't working for me anymore. Well, Janet's waiting so I guess that's it." Damian shrugged his shoulders and without so much as a glance at their child walked out of their lives forever.

It was in that moment that Melinda locked her heart away and refused to ever hand it to another. She toyed with the chain to the small key she wore around her neck, a constant reminder that she alone had the power to unlock the vault of her emotions.

Melinda struggled in the months that followed his departure stretching the meager savings that he left for her until it was nearly gone. Damian never could hold down a job and Melinda had no skills to speak of having married him at such a young age. It had been next to impossible for her to find work.

On the rare occasion that he would call her, she would beg him to help financially. "You have to be able to send us something Damian. Janet has money, lots of it. Can't you spare something? They are going to take the house!"

"Sorry Mellie, Janet keeps a pretty tight fist around the purse strings. You'll figure it out."

"You do not understand how hard it is to find a decent job and take care of Thalia as well! I don't have any skills!" The desperation rose in her voice as she pleaded with him.

A wry smile formed on her mouth as she remembered his last words to her, grating and unkind."Well you always were a good fuck."

The quick tapping at her office door jarred her back to the present. Closing her eyes, as if to shut out the memories of the past eight years, Melinda drew a shaky breath, "Come in."

"I'm sorry to bother you Ms. Owen but Detective Slater is here and he says it's important."

"That's all right, Marielle. Just give me a moment and then show him in."

Melinda sat at her desk, straightened a few things and waited as the detective entered. She didn't speak until the door was firmly shut. "Hello Luke, it's been awhile. Is this a social call?"

Luke Slater had been a vice cop for ten years before transferring to the Violent Crimes Unit and had become acquainted with Melinda during that time. He would be lying if he said he didn't feel some attraction for her but the job and Melinda's own reluctance prevented any involvement to occur. "No, Melinda it isn't."

Melinda rose from the desk and approached him, "I see...then what can I do for you Detective?"

"Ms. Owen...Melinda, there is no easy way to say this...Damian, your ex, he's dead." He watched her carefully for a reaction of any kind.

Melinda's breath caught in her throat as she struggled to maintain her composure. Stunned and in shock, she steeled her nerves before speaking. "When...how did it happen?"

"They found him in an alley late this afternoon. His body was mutilated Melinda."

"Mutilated...how?"

Luke shifted uneasily and averted his eyes as he explained in detail how they found Damian Owen's body and in what condition. "Melinda," his husky voice was soft, almost gentle, "the department is looking at you for this."

Melinda laughed harshly, "Believe me Luke if that man had any balls I would have cut them off and shoved them somewhere more fitting when he left me eight years ago." Exhaling sharply she leaned against the desk, "Are you here to arrest me then?"

"No Melinda, I'm here unofficially, as a friend, to warn you. It's an election year and the mayor has been on the captain's back to shut you down for years. He thinks he can pin this on you."

She held his gaze for a long moment. He had kind eyes despite the rugged lines of his face. "Thank you Luke."

Slater hesitated as though there was more but instead turned on the heel of his boot and headed toward the door. He looked down as his hand grasped the knob and quietly offered, "If there's anything you need...legal advice...anything, please call me, Mel."

"I'll be fine Luke. You should go."

A surge of emotion rushed through her as she struggled to keep the tears at bay. She was unsure as to whether it was sorrow or relief that threatened to take hold. Placing a trembling hand on the phone she composed herself once more and placed a call. "Mayor Winslow, please."

Tapping a long scarlet fingernail on the phone she waited impatiently until she heard a man's brusque voice in the receiver. "Hello Garrett; it's Melinda. You've been a naughty mayor. Shall we meet; say 10PM, the private entrance?"

Wow...this was difficult to read. What an asshole husband. I mean what a complete jerk.

I really like Melinda. And I love this story. I hope you continue with it.

The shots and the settings are just BEAUTIFUL! I love her office, and the painting on the wall.

I really like her too! She has really taken hold of my imagination. Not sure how I will follow this. I will probably skip around a lot instead of doing consecutive chapters.

I agonized over that office LOL! You know how hard that was...and the painting...thank you. I was pleased with how it turned out and I love that mesh!

What gorgeous shots Gayl! Love the effects of the flashbacks but you should have made that Damian an ugly bastard to go along with his personality! :D He is a really good looking sim!

That last thing he said to her though, I could almost feel the knife going in MY chest! So sad and heart wrenching.

I'm intrigued as to where this goes now! I love the office, it is gorgeous! Sounds like she has some strings to pull, can't wait to see what happens! Great start!

Very intriguing! Lovely shots!

Her ex got what he had coming to him! How someone can behave so callously toward someone else I will never understand!

I really enjoyed this Gayl can't wait to see where this is going! Also loved the whole set up! And the key necklace is very symbolic!

You have been a naughty mayor" Love it!
Is Damian 'Jake Gylenhall? Looks like him! Love the open shirt outfit he was wearing, wow!

Melinda seems to be an astute business woman, I too, love the office! Great look, esp the large painting of her, nice touch!

Damian dead? So much for him, then, LOL! And the cop looks intriguing, good of him to warn her!

Ok, already I an sucked in! Great work, love the soft hue on the flashbacks, Wonderful gayl!

That was me above, delete it if you like, I am finding this keyboard a bitch, fingers keep slipping, misspelling...LOL!

Gayl January 26, 2009 5:41 PM

Thanks Emily! Yes Melinda has learned over the years how to pull strings...at some point I will delve into how she became successful.

I take no credit for creating Damian; I downloaded him for his "package". hehe He is a hottie but his personality makes him ugly in the end. He got what he deserved.

And thanks for the compliments on the shots...I wasn't sure if they looked dreamy or flashbacky (I know that isn't a word) enough.

Gayl January 26, 2009 5:43 PM

Damian was a selfish jerk who used Melinda until something better came along. As Melinda said, she would have definitely shoved his body parts somewhere more fitting if given the opportunity.

Not sure where it will go yet but hopefully I can give you all glimpses here and there that will put things together.

Gayl January 26, 2009 5:46 PM

Karen, no worries on the first comment...he would love to warm her if only she would let him...LOL!

Not Jake Gylenhall; I don't think it is anyone famous...not sure though. Again, it was his goods I was interested in. I don't usually use someone else's characters but I knew he was going to kick the bucket and he did spawn a lovely child. He will return in flashbacks however.

No worries about the keyboard...I have a normal one and I can't type for shit on it either.

WOW!!! This was excellent! The storyline is fantastic and the shots were lovely, and the sims gorgeous!!! You thought about every single detail!

now that SOB got what he deserved... can't feel sorry for him...

Melinda, I doubt she has something to do with his death... but that call to the Mayor has me intrigued... lol
the police guy, he and Melinda would look great together! :D

Great job!!!

Mao January 28, 2009 7:11 PM

Wow, that Damian was a jerk. At least Melinda got away from him, though I think his last comment may have inspired her a bit...

Of course she knows the mayor, he's probably a regular. I can't wait to see how this unfolds.

Very awesome, Gayl. It'll be fun to learn more about Melinda, the woman behind Chameleon. ;)

Gayl January 31, 2009 11:47 AM

Melinda knows quite a few powerful people...intimately. She is a strong, independent woman but she wasn't always that way. I hope to show glimpses of her life, past and present, when time and inclination allows.

Gayl January 31, 2009 11:48 AM

Thanks Sandy, and you are right, Mel did not kill her ex. She and the cop would make an interesting pair, I know he has thought about it, but she has closed off her heart. Glad you liked the shots; she is lovely.

Gayl January 31, 2009 11:49 AM

Damian was a jerk and he will show more jerkiness in other scenes. I plan to show how Melinda ended up where she is, how she got there. Yes, his last statement was an eye opener in many ways. Thanks for reading Mao.

Colliegirl December 28, 2009 7:32 AM

Whoah! That was a surprise ending for me... "Hello, Garrett. You've been a naughty mayor." Lol! Melinda sure has outdone herself - she has absolutely risen to the top! What a woman!

That Damian - what a jerk. I can't stand those kind of guys! Grrr... Looks like he got his just-deserves, since he clearly had no intention of ever making it right. (It always shocks me how a parent can walk away from their child and never look back) I wonder what trouble he got himself into. Sounds like he might have died in a horrible way, being that he was mutilated and dumped. Hmmm... wonder if he did the same thing again to the wrong kind of woman! Wouldn't that be some ironic justice!

I'm very curious to find out how this part of the story resolves itself!

Wonderful job, Gayl! See ya again, soon! : )

Gayl December 28, 2009 9:26 AM

Colliegirl! Thanks for stopping by! Yes Melinda definitely rose to the top but the road was a very tough one. I hope to reveal it little by little.

I can confirm that Damian died in a most disgusting way, and he deserved it. Thanks again! Hope the holidays were good for you!
